CHAPTER 11

Arno du Toit’s modest piece of property was a complete contrast to Sipho Gola’s home in Llandudno. For starters, his home was on only five acres, and although the house was modern and extremely well kept, it had a homier feel to it, whereas Sipho’s home was chic and very contemporary.

Sipho had an immaculately manicured garden that gave off a tropical feel to Kat. Arno had uncultivated land towards the rear of his property that he used for riding horses. Jacob had driven them into the prosperous village of Noordhoek, and found his way through the back roads to Arno du Toit’s home, which also had electric fencing and an automatic security gate.

As Jacob stopped in front of the gate, Kat found herself wondering if there was going to be much of a contrast between the two preferred bidders for the joint Anglo-American development project. She soon found that like most things in life, the answer was yes, and no.

“Hello, everybody!” Arno said, as he introduced himself and his wife, Marie, who had followed closely behind him from the main entrance of the house. Following them was what looked like a massive bull mastiff dog that barked when he saw the intruders on his property.

“Hello, big boy!” Kat said, as she bent down and offered the back of her hand to the dog to sniff and examine.

“I see you are not afraid of dogs, unlike your driver, who I imagine has bolted down to the shops. This guy here is called Rhino, and if you felt how hard his head is and watched him chase a rabbit through the veld, you would understand why he’s named that!” While Arno talked, he stroked his dog’s massive head. When she thought Rhino wouldn’t mind, Kat did the same.

“What breed is Rhino? He looks like an English Mastiff.”

“You are right. He is a Boerboel, which is a South African type of mastiff. They were bred to look after and protect farms, so they are very loyal and very strong. There are stories of
